Reading Resources

This book written by Bobby Jamieson is an excellent book for a man with the aspiration to become involved in vocational ministry.  It is excellent and a definite must read.  In this book The Path to Being a Pastor, Bobby Jamieson explains why it’s better to emphasize “aspiration” over “calling” as men pursue the office of elder and encourages readers to make sure they are pastorally gifted before considering the role. He shares from his own eleven-year experience preparing to be a pastor by walking potential leaders through different stages of ministry training, from practical steps―such as cultivating godly ambition and leadership, observing healthy churches, and mastering Scripture―to personal advice on building a strong family and succeeding in seminary. Emphasizing the importance of prayer, godly counsel, and immersion in the local church, Jamieson encourages men to ask Am I qualified? instead of Am I called? when considering a life in ministry.

In the preface, the author shares his personal journey of resisting God and the church as a young man until he gave his life to Christ in college. He then wrestled with a call to ministry. In this book he writes in a very intimate way discussing the heavy topics of calling: Do you desire the ministry, character, having your personal house in order, your giftings, affirmation from your church, loving people, personal passion for the gospel and the great commission, what it means to be engaged in fruitful ministry and to defend the faith. Finally, are you willing to truly surrender to God’s call. Dr. Allen is the president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.

The final portion is for all pastors to consider patience and the right attitude for service and sacrifice realizing as God’s workers we are always growing. The authors have commissioned the largest and most comprehensive study of de-churching in America by renowned sociologists Dr. Ryan Burge and Dr. Paul Djupe.

One of the biggest challenges of evangelism is many Christians fear failure lacking confidence to share their faith. Dr. Kent Tucker provides a simple solution in the book entitled, “In the Red Zone – A Game Plan For How to Share Your Faith.” He uses the analogy of what has become known as the red zone or the last 20 yards before a football team scores a touchdown. He has put together a clear and compelling presentation making it easy to share one’s faith. He provides a diagram on how to explain to anyone how an unbeliever falls short without Jesus, and through the atoning sacrifice of Christ and developing a personal relationship with Jesus how they are saved. This is definitely a great tool and available at https://howtoshareyourfaith.com/

One of the books recommended by Pastor Tim LaFleur is “Designed to Lead” authored by Eric Geiger and Kevin Peck. They provide a great outline for equipping disciple making leaders in the church. They wrote, “Many churches do not develop leaders intentionally and consistently." This book was written to address this challenge and is divided into three main sections: convictions, culture and constructs. In the first section the authors noted: “For equipping – a biblical approach to ministry – to occur in a local church, the pastors and the church as a whole must hold rightly to a conviction that all of God’s people are ministers.” In the second section of the book, Geiger and Peck emphasize church leaders must care about culture as it is a theological issue and shaping culture is essential to transform the church to be on mission for God as disciple makers. The final portion of the book focuses on strategies for discipleship and leadership development. In summary, this is a good read with a concentrated focus on empowering everyone in the church to work together to grow the Kingdom of God on earth.

What makes a leader a Christian leader? Too many churches and parachurch groups operate under secular leadership principles and strategies without considering what Scripture teaches. In this accessible and comprehensive book, leadership expert Aubrey Malphurs articulates a working definition of Christian leadership based on the Bible and his own extensive research.  Malphurs began by defining a uniquely Christian leader from the inside out, from godly character and commitment to pure motives and a servant attitude. He examines the leaders of the first-century church and then discusses qualities such as credibility, capability, and influence that are essential for successful leadership. Each chapter contains helpful questions for reflection and discussion. The appendix includes numerous audits to help readers evaluate themselves on various leadership components. .  Dr. Malphurs passed away in December 2022.  He taught in the Educational Ministries and Leadership and Pastoral Ministries departments at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Most Christians know something of the apostle Paul’s life and ministry, but what about the incredible team of influencers he assembled and mobilized? Who were they, and how did Paul lead this team to accomplish God’s purposes? Even more, what can we learn from their successes and failures, and how can we imitate their qualities?  The author answers these questions in this book.  Whether you are in a position of leadership or are simply a passionate follower of Christ, you are an influencer that God is using to build His church. And while Paul and His Team certainly reveals a lot about Paul's character as a leader, it also highlights both prominent and those not so well known members of his team to offer a textured portrait of the early church’s influence in spreading the gospel.
